What is an
MCP connector?

Before MCP, you were the glue. To get a useful answer you'd gather the context by hand, paste it into the chat, read the reply, then copy it back to wherever the work actually lives. Every task meant swivelling between tabs and re-explaining your business to a model that forgot it a minute later.

MCP removes that loop. Your AI reaches into your tools directly and works where you work: ask once, and it can pull from your knowledge graph, draft against your CRM, and push the result, no copy-paste, no swivel-chair. It also gets your AI out of the chat box and into the tools teams actually run on, Microsoft Teams, your CRM, your own agents. And because it's one standard interface, there's no tool marriage: swap the model or a tool later without rebuilding the wiring.

The simplest way to picture it: when your AI shows a menu of connectors, that menu is, in effect, a list of MCP servers. Pick one and the model can use that tool or data source. Neo4j's free tier, for example, ships with an MCP server, which is how Claude can populate a graph and then answer from it.

I build these myself. I wrote the API and the MCP server for Brain Graph, and I use it through that connector every day. It is the clean, swappable way to wire a digital brain to the AI working on top of it.

The cleanest analogy: MCP is a USB-C port for AI. Before USB-C, every device needed its own cable; before MCP, every AI-to-tool link needed its own custom build. MCP standardises the plug, so any model that speaks it can talk to any tool that exposes it, with no bespoke wiring in between.

That standard plug is what keeps you free. Wire your digital brain in once through MCP and you can change the model on top, Claude today, something else tomorrow, without rebuilding the connection. The brain stays; the head swaps.

On the far side of an MCP connector is an MCP server: a small piece of software that exposes one tool or data source. It can front your knowledge graph, a CRM, a database, a file store, or an action like "send this email". When your AI lists its connectors, that list is, in effect, the MCP servers it can reach, pick one and the model can query or act through it.

This isn't theory for me. I wrote the API and the MCP server behind Brain Graph, and I query my own brain through it every working day. Building that server is exactly how you turn a digital brain from a thing you look at into a thing your AI can use. Without that server, a knowledge graph is just a database sitting in the corner; with it, the graph becomes the live memory behind every answer and every action your AI takes.

MCP was introduced by Anthropic as an open standard, and it's been adopted broadly across the AI tools you already use, so a brain you wire up today isn't locked to one vendor. That openness is the whole point: it's the difference between renting a connection inside someone's product and owning one you can point at any AI you choose.

For you, that's one practical guarantee: you never rebuild from scratch to follow the AI race.
